Check If Google Is Indexing Your Site Correctly From Webmaster Tools

Google Webmaster Tools introduced a new feature around few weeks ago. It’s called Index Status. I was taking a look at it today and it can really help you to identify any search indexing related issue for your website. Index Status is under Health menu. When you click on it you should see a graph like below that will give you the total number of webpages indexed in Google search of your site for every week over a period of time. So if you see that your graph is rising steadily then you can rest assured that all is well and your new pages are getting indexed by Googlebot regularly.

New Markup to Describe Video Content on Your Site

Perhaps as a webmaster you have heard of Schema.org. It’s a joint effort of major search engines like Google, Bing and Yahoo to provide comon html tags to describe different types of content in your websites that can be easily recognized by most of the search engines. Few days back they have come up with a common way to describe videos so that those can be indexed better. The markup is pretty straightforward actually. Like any other schema.org data, you will have to define an itemscope with the itemtype=”http://schema.org/VideoObject” along with name, description, and thumbnailURL properties. And another additional property that would have to be defined is either the embedURL or the contentURL. Here is an example video markup given in Google Webmaster Central Blog:

Search Query Data From Webmaster Tools Has Been Integrated to Google Analytics

Google has now integrated search queries data from Google Webmaster Tools to Google Analytics so that user can better analyze their traffic data with the help of better filtering and visualization options that one can get in Analytics account. So if you now go to your Google Analytics account using the new interface, you will see a new sidebar menu called Search Engine Optimization under Traffic Sources which in turn is under REPORTS tab. For your convenience I have attached a screenshot for the same :)

Subdomain Links Will Be Considered As Internal In Google Webmaster Tools

Google just announced this significant change on link reporting feature in Google Webmaster Tools on their official Webmaster Central blog. Previously the links from your sub-domains were considered as external links by Google and they used to show these links in external links section. That included www subdomain too. Suppose you registered www.yoursite.com in Google webmaster tools. So links coming from yoursite.com would have been considered as external links. Even in case you registered a domain with sub-folder path like www.yoursite.com/test/group1, link from www.yoursite.com/test/group1/profile.html would have been considered as internal link whereas a link from www.yoursite.com/test/ would have been an external link. That was because Google used to only consider links that started with your exact registered url as internal links.

Most Accurate Way to Check Whether Your Site is Listed in DMOZ

Do you want to check whether your site is already listed in DMOZ or not? Then you don’t have to go to any online DMOZ listing checker for that. These services use the same basic principle as I am going to share here. But when they display the result most of them will show that your site or blog is already listed in DMOZ open  directory, though in reality your site is not listed there at all. I tested several of those DMOZ listing checkers personally. I never submitted my site to DMOZ and it is not listed there. Still many of them showed that this domain name is already listed there.

Do Not Submit Site to .CO.CC Web Directories

To say the least, .CO.CC domain is down and out. Just a few days ago Google search has banished it from their index. As most of you know and many of you have done it by themselves, .co.cc had become a free domain service where you just go, register and create a low quality site or blog with little content. It’s like a bulk service where you create almost same sites like article or web directories, put some ads and then forget about it. Even many of those .co.cc sites have been used to spread malware over the internet. So Google has taken strict action and banned any site with .co.cc as domain name from their index. You can debate whether you want to punish all for some other people’s mistake, but Google has the right to choose what to show on their own search and I guess it will clean up the results in a big way :)

Google Webmaster Tools Adds Metrics to Show +1 Button Search Impact

I use AddThis dashboard to check the data on how my blog has been shared across social bookmarking sites. And as I use AddThis widget to show Google +1 button on my blog posts, I can also get the sharing trend of Google +1 button from my blog pages. But just a day or two ago Google +1 Metrics has been added in Google Webmaster Tools. Now if you open your site dashboard from Webmaster Tools, you will see +1 Metrics Menu at the sidebar. Click on it to get all the sub-menus and explore all the detailed info including how many unique visitors clicked Google +1 button on your site and which pages have been shared and when. There is another interesting aspect of measuring the search impact of Google +1 button on your site. As you can see from the screenshot, you will find the number of +1 annotated impressions on Google search results page compared to the total impressions for your site. You can get the same data on actual results page clicks on your site link. And if you generate enough traffic to gain a substantial data, Google will show the difference on CTR for pages shown from with & without + annotated results.

Google Rolled Out Farmer Algorithm Globally to All English Users

In February I wrote a post updating you about the implementation of Google’s high-quality sites algorithm that you call as Panda update :) . At that time it was rolled out only to Google.com users in the USA. A few days back Google has rolled it out for all users using Google search in English whether they are from English speaking countries or non-English speaking countries.

phpLD Free Version Mod-Rewrite Fix To Use SEO-Friendly URL in Category Pages

PHPLinkDirectory gives away their 2.2 version script as free. And it is one of the most popular free directory scripts among the directory owners who don’t want to pay any price for a script. And like newer versions, phpLD 2.2 also gives you an option to use mod-rewrite to get seo-friendly url for sub-directory pages. But whenever you check the option in admin dashboard you might get 404 error for category pages. And it is a common problem for phpLD 2.
