How to Play Dangerous Dave in Windows 7

Have you heard of Dangerous Dave? It’s a tiny little Dos game published in 1988. But when I was in college 4-5 years back, we played it a lot in my hostel. The game was quite intriguing. Basically you need to keep your lives and collect the gold cups and move on to the next level. Sadly I could never reach the last level :(

Anyways, if you are here following this link on how to play this Dos game in Windows 7, I assume you are already familiar with it. Dangerous Dave is freeware and the game zipped file is only around 90 kb. So today I thought of giving it a try after a long time. I downloaded Dangerous Dave file and unzipped it. But I couldn’t make it run in my Windows 7 machine. It showed some error like:

16 bit MS-DOS Sub system
This system does not support fullscreen mode. Choose ‘close’ to terminate the
application.

But a little bit of Google searching really helped. To run this kind of old Games you need to have DosBox that can emulate the plain old Dos in your new Windows system. Go to http://www.dosbox.com/download.php?main=1 and download the first link of DOSBox (Version 0.74). Don’t worry. It’s only around 1.5 mb and won’t take your system resources :)

Now install it and open DosBox 0.74.

Suppose your game folder is C:\dave . So you need to mount Drive C with C:\dave\ as contents. For this, type the following command: Z:\> MOUNT C C:\dave

It will show message like “Drive C is mounted as local directory C:\dave\“.

Then go to C drive: Z:\> C:

Now use the following command: C:\> dave

The game will start. To make it full screen use Alt + Enter . When you want to quit Dos Box after playing Dangerous Dave, just type: C:\> exit

Now play and enjoy ;)
